As sailing vessels approach the entrance to the Belfast Harbor there are several outcrops which are seen when the tide is low. As the tide rises, these navigational hazards are all submerged, except one, Steele’s Ledge.
The outcrop and subsequent structures that have been built here are referred to by several names; Steele’s Ledge, Steels Ledge (note John Steele’s name is spelled incorrectly), Belfast Beacon, Belfast Bay Beacon, The Monument.
The Monument is the local accepted and familiar name of the structure, and will be used as the primary alias forward going.
